‘Hamd & Shukr

‘Hamd is praise with the purpose of veneration regardless of whether it is associated with a blessing or not.

Shukr is an action which alludes to venerating the one who bestows a blessing due to his bestowing a blessing regardless of whether the veneration is expressed by the tongue, heart or limbs.

‘Hamd occurs only from the tongue and may or may not be associated with a blessing. Whereas shukr is always associated with a blessing but may occur from the tongue or elsewhere.

‘Hamd is more general than shukr with regards to what it is associated with (i.e. it may or may not be related to a blessing), but more specific with regards to its place of occurrence. Shukr is the opposite.
